The renewed Ikaalinen Spa & Resort is also renewing its commitment to sustainability and a more responsible tomorrow. We’ve already taken our first concrete steps, and this page will be updated as we continue our journey towards fulfilling our environmental promise.
Our Environmental Promise
Ikaalinen Spa & Resort is committed to reducing its negative impact on the environment. We aim to lessen our environmental footprint by implementing the Ekokompassi environmental management system, and we are also part of Motiva’s Energy Efficiency Agreement.
We are constantly exploring new ways to reduce emissions and our environmental impact. We also strive to contribute positively to society by encouraging customers and regional partners to take environmentally conscious action. In addition, we work with local schools to raise awareness on topics such as biodiversity and food waste.
Our Environmental Programme for 2024–2026
1. Energy Efficiency
We aim to reduce our energy consumption – including electricity, district heating and water use. Steps include switching to LED lighting, exploring alternative energy sources, monthly consumption monitoring and identifying areas for improvement.
2. Waste and Food Waste
We are developing more detailed monitoring systems to track food waste and recycling rates. This helps us identify new ways to reduce the environmental burden caused by waste.
3. Procurement
We aim to increase the share of Finnish and locally produced food in our procurement.
In our restaurants, we offer greener alternatives alongside red meat and encourage reduced consumption of red meat.
We monitor the sustainability practices of our partners and encourage them to make more responsible choices.
4. Communication
We will regularly inform our guests about our sustainability and environmental programmes and their goals. By communicating clearly, we also aim to inspire our staff and partners to adopt more environmentally friendly practices.

Let’s Reduce Food Waste – Together
We serve delicious buffet meals daily at our Resort, and your actions can help us cut down on food waste.
We kindly encourage all diners to take only what they need on their plate – you’re always welcome to go back for more.
Some of our surplus items are also available through the ResQ app, depending on availability!
Recycling in Hotel Rooms
As our guest, you can support our journey towards more sustainable choices during your stay.
Before you leave, you can bring used batteries, bottles or cans to reception. If you prefer, you can simply leave them on your room table – we’ll take care of the recycling for you.
In November 2024, we’ll be introducing paper biowaste bags in all hotel rooms. We’ll also be setting up recycling points in the lobbies of both the Main Building and the Loft Building. By sorting and recycling your waste during your stay, you’re helping us reduce our environmental impact.
Improving Waste Sorting
In summer 2024, we introduced a tracking system for different waste types. At the moment, approximately 55% of materials are reused, while the remaining 45% is directed to energy recovery.
Our aim is to increase the share of recyclable waste through improved sorting practices and to reduce the amount of energy waste and biowaste we produce.
Saving Energy
During quieter periods, we operate only half of the four saunas in our Water Tropic changing rooms. In the winter, we also cover the outdoor pool during the day to reduce energy loss.
During busier times, all saunas and the outdoor pool are fully in use for our guests.
Outside peak hours, some of the equipment in the Water Tropic area runs on automated settings. We’ve also improved the lighting in the spa area, replacing fixtures with more atmospheric and energy-efficient solutions.
